Are there legal restrictions on window tinting in New York?
Tint darkness is measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the higher the percentage, the more light passes through (lighter tint).
New York has some of the stricter VLT requirements in the U.S. to ensure visibility and safety.
Windshield:
Non-reflective tint is only allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield. The rest must allow ≥ 70% light to pass through.Front Side Windows (driver & passenger):
Must allow at least 70% VLT. Darker films (like 50%, 35%, 20%, 5%) are illegal on these windows.Rear Side Windows:
For cars/sedans: Must allow at least 70% VLT.
Some interpretations allow darker rear side tint on SUVs/vans if the vehicle has dual outside mirrors, but always double-check local enforcement.
Rear Window (rear windshield):
Any tint darkness is allowed if the vehicle has mirrors on both sides.
